The sweep
Every morning, before most households have located their slippers, the Department reads the room. It reads this season's gift lists in full, the ones parents actually consult. It checks what is selling, what is sold out, what the professionals rate and what the children will not stop talking about. Each division is judged on its own terms, because a six-month-old and a sixteen-year-old answer to very different authorities. Every finding is held on watch for a fortnight. Anything silent for fourteen mornings is retired.
The heat
Heat is the Department's reading of how wanted a thing is right now. It climbs with every current gift list that names it, every independent report that corroborates it and every voice that will not stop mentioning it. Newcomers run hot. A finding that goes quiet cools each morning. Five bars is red alert. Rising, steady and evergreen describe the trajectory: the playground is talking, the demand is holding, the fad has been outlasted.
The safety floor
Every item is checked for age fit. Items with small parts, magnets, batteries or cords carry a note to check the label. Anything the Department removes stays off this page. Check any product against the CPSC recall list before buying.
